The Mint Julep: More Than Just a Race Day Sipper

Howdy, neighbors! If there’s one drink that captures the soul of a humid South Carolina afternoon, it’s the Mint Julep. While most folks only think about this icy delight when the horses are running in Kentucky, here at Gaslite Liquors, we reckon it’s a year-round Lowcountry essential.

A Frosty History

Before it became the official drink of the Derby in 1938, the Julep was actually considered medicinal! In the 1700s, folks in the South sipped a version of it to settle an upset stomach or to get a "jumpstart" on a long day of farming. Eventually, the medicinal brandy was swapped for the bold, caramel notes of American Bourbon, and a star was born.

The Gaslite Mixologist: The "North Charleston" Julep

The secret to a perfect Julep isn't just the whiskey—it's the crushed ice. You want that silver cup (or heavy glass) to be so cold it develops a thick frost on the outside.

  • The Build: Muddle 8-10 fresh mint leaves with 1/2 oz simple syrup.

  • The Spirit: Pour in 2 oz of a high-proof Bourbon (we have plenty of affordable spirits in South Carolina that fit the bill).

  • The Finish: Pack tightly with crushed ice and stir until the glass is freezing to the touch.

  • Pairing: Try this with some salty boiled peanuts or a pimento cheese crostini. The sweetness of the bourbon cuts right through the salt!
