Hey there, neighbors! It’s your favorite crew over at Gaslite Liquors, your North Charleston staple just a stone's throw right by the airport. With June rolling in, our minds are turning to a beautiful and profoundly significant celebration: Juneteenth.
As we gear up to honor freedom and Black culture on June 19th, you’ll notice a vibrant theme running through every cookout and block party in the Lowcountry—the color red. Today, we’re diving into the "Liquid History" of the famous Juneteenth Red Drink and how you can mix up a meaningful toast this year.
The Story Behind the Scarlet Sip
The tradition of drinking red beverages on Juneteenth is deeply rooted in history, tracking back to West African traditions.
When these traditions traveled to the American South, the color red evolved into a poignant symbol of resilience, strength, and the blood shed by enslaved ancestors. From homemade strawberry soda to classic hibiscus punch, keeping a red drink in your hand on Juneteenth is a delicious way to honor perseverance.
